How to use this

Two grids on the same template. The first is empty - print it, fill in each cell with a one-line note while you revise. The second is a worked example to check yourself against.

Each cell asks one question: does this row strengthen the column quality (mark +) or weaken it (mark -)? Then add a one-line note saying why. The plus and minus columns are deliberately not pre-printed - your judgement is the work.

Sex vs gender = is gender socially constructed, not biological? Patriarchy is systemic = is patriarchy a pervasive system in every institution? Personal is political = is private life shaped by power and therefore political? State as solution = can the state deliver emancipation through reform? Equality vs difference = are men and women essentially the same (androgyny)? Route to change = is reform within the system enough, or is revolution needed?

Liberal +Gender is socially constructed; differences are insignificant. ±Sees historic discrimination, not a pervasive system. -Wary of treating the private sphere as political. +The state is reformable and can deliver equality. +Equality feminism: androgynous, same rational nature. -Reform within the system, not revolution.
Socialist +Gender is shaped by economic conditions, not biology. ±Real, but capitalism is the deeper cause. +The personal is political because of capitalism. -The capitalist state serves capitalism, not women. +Equality feminism: androgynous, differences are economic. +Revolutionary transformation of the economy.
Radical +Gender is the deepest social construction by patriarchy. +Patriarchy is the central concept - systemic and pervasive. +The personal is political is the heart of feminism. -The state itself is patriarchal at its core. ±An internal split - mostly androgyny, cultural is difference. +Revolution against patriarchy, even beyond economics.
Postmodern ±Even woman is partly constructed and varies. ±Real, but it mutates by race and class. ±Private experience differs by race and class. -State-level solutions are too broad. ±Rejects a single female nature on either side. ±Recognise difference rather than universal programmes.
What the filled grid shows. Read down each column to see which rows score plus, mixed or minus - the pattern that drives the judgement.
