Likely exam angles. The 24-mark question lands on a dimension (human nature, the state, society, the economy) or on a spec core idea (rejection of the state, liberty, anarchy is order, economic freedom, utopian). The 2019 Q5a on the economy is the standard anarchism question. Each angle is covered in the cards below.

1. What anarchism is - the shared base

Anarchism is the ideology built around the rejection of the state. The 9PL0 spec is blunt: the state is "immoral as it rules by physical coercion and deceit, unjust in its defence of economic inequality and must be rejected due to its impact on human nature". All anarchists agree the state has to go - there is no anarchist version of a small or reformed state.

The two paired ideas no other ideology shares

  • Rejection of the state. The state is rejected as immoral (rules by coercion), unjust (defends inequality) and incompatible with human nature. It must go and stay gone.
  • Anarchy is order. Once the state is gone, social order does not collapse - it emerges naturally and spontaneously from human nature. The spec calls this "the key to the belief in a peaceful, stable, stateless society". Without it anarchism would be merely destructive; with it the ideology becomes a positive project.
The running disagreement. Is human nature cooperative and altruistic (the collectivist view) or rational, self-interested and competitive (the individualist view)? Every other anarchist disagreement traces back to this split, and the exam tests it directly.

2. Collectivist anarchism

The communal strand. The 9PL0 spec: committed to common ownership to nurture rational, altruistic and cooperative human nature, through anarcho-communism, mutualism and anarcho-syndicalism. Named thinkers: Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin and Goldman.

  • Human nature: cooperative, altruistic, sociable. Kropotkin's mutual aid is the natural form of human cooperation; Bakunin stressed human sociability.
  • The state: reject because it defends economic inequality and class oppression (Bakunin, Kropotkin). Goldman: the state is "a cold monster".
  • Society: federated communes, collective decision-making, solidarity.
  • The economy: common ownership and mutual aid; abolish private property (Proudhon, Kropotkin).
The internal split. Inside collectivism, mutualists keep the fruits of their own labour (possession not property) while anarcho-communists hold products in common with distribution by need. That ownership difference is exam material in its own right.

3. Individualist anarchism

The egoist strand. The 9PL0 spec: committed to freedom where rational, autonomous, competitive and self-interested individuals can make judgements in their own best interests, through anarcho-capitalism and egoism. Named thinker: Max Stirner.

  • Human nature: rational, autonomous, competitive, self-interested. The ego is the centre of the moral universe (Stirner).
  • The state: reject because it crushes self-sovereign individual liberty. No authority - state, collective or moral - has any claim over the ego.
  • Society: the Union of Egoists (Stirner) - voluntary association of self-sovereign individuals who cooperate only when it suits them.
  • The economy: a free market without state regulation; private property protected. Anarcho-capitalism applies the same logic - the market supplies order without a state.
The internal split. Inside individualism, egoism opposes capitalism as a system (for Stirner no economic system has any claim over the ego), whereas anarcho-capitalism builds everything on an unfettered free market. Same umbrella, opposite stance on capitalism.

4. The four sub-traditions inside the umbrellas

The thinker flag. Anarcho-capitalism is the one sub-tradition with no named 9PL0 spec thinker. Flagging that accurately in an essay is exactly the precision the examiner reports ask for. Anarcho-syndicalism is a third collectivist form, organised around workers' direct control of production through unions and federations.

How to deploy them. Lead with the strands; the named thinkers add value and meaning to the strands. Working minimum: two named spec thinkers. Strong pairings: Kropotkin against Stirner on whether human nature is cooperative or self-interested; Proudhon against Kropotkin on ownership inside collectivism; Goldman against Proudhon on revolution versus peaceful means.

6. The five spec core ideas and the strand map

The pattern to reuse. The state and anarchy-is-order are areas of agreement; human nature, economic freedom and liberty are areas of disagreement. The agreement masks the deeper split over human nature, which drives everything else. That tension is the spine of almost every anarchism 24-marker.

7. The four dimensions - agreement and disagreement

Human nature

Agreement: both strands treat the state as oppressive to human nature, so the state must go; without it, human nature can flourish. Disagreement: cooperative and altruistic (Kropotkin) versus rational and self-sovereign (Stirner) - the deepest anarchist split. The spec flags "differing views of liberty and human nature within anarchism".

The state

Agreement: both reject the state utterly - the deepest area of agreement in the ideology. Disagreement: the ground differs - economic inequality (Bakunin, Kropotkin) versus crushing of individual liberty (Stirner).

Society

Agreement: both believe spontaneous order is possible without a state - anarchy is order. Disagreement: communal solidarity and federated communes versus the Union of Egoists, a voluntary association of self-sovereign individuals.

The economy

Agreement: both reject state ownership and regulation of the economy. Disagreement: the sharpest area - common ownership and abolition of private property (Proudhon, Kropotkin) versus a free market with private property (Stirner, anarcho-capitalism).

The pattern to reuse. On every dimension the agreement is the rejection of the state, and the disagreement traces back to the cooperative-versus-self-interested view of human nature.

8. Exam method - how the 24-marker is scored

  • Marks: 24, split AO1 8 / AO2 8 / AO3 8.
  • 'To what extent' is a question of degree - weigh whether agreement or disagreement is more significant.
  • Structure by theme, not by strand. Two-strand structures often run two agreement and one disagreement paragraph, or the reverse, rather than one paragraph per strand. Weave the strands together inside each theme.
  • Lead with strands; thinkers in support. The named thinkers add value and meaning to the strands.
  • Use the sub-traditions for precision. The umbrellas give the big frame; naming a sub-tradition with its thinker (or flagging that anarcho-capitalism has no named spec thinker) shows the precision examiners reward.
  • Two named spec thinkers minimum. No spec thinkers, or only one side argued, caps the answer at Level 2.
  • Judge as you go. Interim judgements through the essay score better than a one-line summary at the end.
  • Strands and thinkers only. Real-world politics is brief illustration at most - it belongs in the UK Politics questions, not the ideology essay.
